Perspiration is a natural physiological phenomenon that allows the body to cool down during exercise or in hot weather. Sweating acts as a thermostat. The hypothalamus gland located in the brain regulates the body temperature at 37°C. If the body heats up above this temperature, the gland will order the sweat glands on the surface of the skin to produce sweat which, when it evaporates, will cool the body.
Perspiration, also called sweating, concentrates on different parts of the body. In the armpits (we speak of axillary hyperhidrosis), in the scalp, the back and the chest but also the hands and even the feet.
In some people, a dysfunction of the sweat glands can cause an excessive production of sweat and cause a disturbance of the body thermoregulation. This is called hyperhidrosis or hypersweating. Cela s’appelle l’hyperhidrose ou hypersudation.
The inconveniences caused by hyperhidrosis can then become a real insecurity and have negative repercussions on one’s social life. Sweaty hands, strong odors, and halos on clothing are all signs that should lead the patient to consult a doctor.
